ABOUT CARYN
THE EARLY YEARS
My eyes opened to a broadcast media career my senior year of high school when I moved from Texas to Southern California and attended Huntington Beach High School, and joined the school’s weekly Campus Update broadcast team as a writer, and eventually was named anchor. The experience launched my future career—I was captivated by the entire creative process—pitching ideas, interviewing people, writing the story, gathering the video, editing the finished product, and delivering it on-air.
MY EDUCATION
I attended California State University, Fullerton, where I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism and minor in Political Science. Getting my first reporting job was challenging—the competition was fierce, even for a low-paying position in a small market. A professor connected me with a CSUF alum working on-air in Los Angeles who recommended hiring a voice coach to give me an edge on the competition, to polish my delivery, so I would stand out to a News Director.
It was hands-down the best career decision I ever made. I considered the cost “my master’s degree.” The one-on-one coaching gave me confidence with industry insight, delivery technique, inflection, voice strengthening exercises—things I never got in my college coursework. My voice coach also assisted me in preparing the plan for my resume reel, and arranging the shoot with a professional photographer-editor.
MY CAREER
My career in broadcast news has taken me from the CNN Los Angeles bureau, to KOSA-TV in Midland- Odessa, Texas, to WHIO-TV in Dayton, Ohio. I’ve worked every position in the newsroom, from assignment editor, news writer, producer, reporter, anchor, to Managing Editor, Breaking News Digital Director, to News Director managing both our broadcast and digital content. A television station is a non-stop marketing and branding machine-from the content your produce on-air and online, to the individual people you hire to present the content on air. In addition, I’ve worked as a voice artist for radio and TV commercials and instructional videos. I’ve earned Emmy Awards, Edward R. Murrow Awards, Associated Press and Society of Professional Journalist awards for both television and digital content work throughout my career, and so have the talented journalists I’ve hired, coached and mentored.
I’ve interviewed U.S. Presidential candidates, death row inmates, victims of natural disaster—and covered every kind of story—from the L.A. riots, to a militia declaring war on Texas, to several deadly tornado outbreaks. The techniques I learned through voice and career coaching, kept me calm, clear-headed, and able to communicate important crisis information to the public at a time they needed it most.
THE VOICE AND IMAGE JOURNEY
Helping others find their authentic voice is immensely rewarding. Helping businesses discover how to communicate their true value to the communities they serve, and build their brand is tremendously exciting.
Think about it—if a person’s voice is distracting—or their social media post doesn’t speak to what you value in that business—you won’t hear the important message they’re trying to convey—you won’t stop your scroll—you’ll likely turn the volume down, or skip the click.
No person intends that outcome. When speaking publicly, lack of preparation, nerves, lack of eye contact, challenging questions, a high-pitch tone, a stumble, a disheveled appearance can lead to a negative perception or outcome if you don’t have proper training.
When creating a post about your business, what you show, what you say in those few words, can win a potential customer or lose one.
If you want to become a better, more confident, memorable speaker—or you want to connect with potential customers online—I can help you become the BEST YOU.
