ABOUT CARYN

THE EARLY YEARS

My eyes opened to a broadcast media career my senior year of high school when I moved from Texas to Southern California and attended Huntington Beach High School, and joined the school’s weekly Campus Update broadcast team as a writer, and eventually was named anchor. The experience launched my future career—I was captivated by the entire creative process—pitching ideas, interviewing people, writing the story, gathering the video, editing the finished product, and delivering it on-air.

MY EDUCATION

I attended California State University, Fullerton, where I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism and minor in Political Science. Getting my first reporting job was challenging—the competition was fierce, even for a low-paying position in a small market. A professor connected me with a CSUF alum working on-air in Los Angeles who recommended hiring a voice coach to give me an edge on the competition, to polish my delivery, so I would stand out to a News Director.

It was hands-down the best career decision I ever made. I considered the cost “my master’s degree.” The one-on-one coaching gave me confidence with industry insight, delivery technique, inflection, voice strengthening exercises—things I never got in my college coursework. My voice coach also assisted me in preparing the plan for my resume reel, and arranging the shoot with a professional photographer-editor.

MY CAREER

My career in broadcast news has taken me from the CNN Los Angeles bureau, to KOSA-TV in Midland- Odessa, Texas, to WHIO-TV in Dayton, Ohio. I’ve worked every position in the newsroom, from assignment editor, news writer, producer, reporter, anchor, to Managing Editor, Breaking News Digital Director, to News Director managing both our broadcast and digital content. A television station is a non-stop marketing and branding machine-from the content your produce on-air and online, to the individual people you hire to present the content on air. In addition, I’ve worked as a voice artist for radio and TV commercials and instructional videos. I’ve earned Emmy Awards, Edward R. Murrow Awards, Associated Press and Society of Professional Journalist awards for both television and digital content work throughout my career, and so have the talented journalists I’ve hired, coached and mentored.

I’ve interviewed U.S. Presidential candidates, death row inmates, victims of natural disaster—and covered every kind of story—from the L.A. riots, to a militia declaring war on Texas, to several deadly tornado outbreaks. The techniques I learned through voice and career coaching, kept me calm, clear-headed, and able to communicate important crisis information to the public at a time they needed it most.

THE VOICE AND IMAGE JOURNEY

Helping others find their authentic voice is immensely rewarding. Helping businesses discover how to communicate their true value to the communities they serve, and build their brand is tremendously exciting.

Think about it—if a person’s voice is distracting—or their social media post doesn’t speak to what you value in that business—you won’t hear the important message they’re trying to convey—you won’t stop your scroll—you’ll likely turn the volume down, or skip the click.

No person intends that outcome. When speaking publicly, lack of preparation, nerves, lack of eye contact, challenging questions, a high-pitch tone, a stumble, a disheveled appearance can lead to a negative perception or outcome if you don’t have proper training.

When creating a post about your business, what you show, what you say in those few words, can win a potential customer or lose one.

If you want to become a better, more confident, memorable speaker—or you want to connect with potential customers online—I can help you become the BEST YOU.

PEOPLE ARE SAYING...

McCall Vrydaghs Img

McCall Vrydaghs was working as a meteorologist for a small FiOS cable station in New York when I contacted her about a position with WHIO-TV. McCall had a great, authentic presence on-air and excellent meteorology education, and I could see her potential. Once hired, McCall worked on slowing her delivery, annunciation, breathing, allowing for silent pauses, and exuding confidence in the science she knew. Today she is an Emmy award-winning Chief Meteorologist at the #1 CBS affiliate in the country, and I would argue one of the best in the country at what she does because of her commitment to focusing on her delivery, building her confidence, and becoming a stellar leader.

Layron Livingston Img

I first saw Layron Livingston in an anchor-reporter reel from Tyler, Texas. He had great potential—a sharp look, very articulate, very authentic delivery. I made contact with Layron who was apprehensive at first about leaving his hometown. I checked in regularly with Layron and after months of conversations and reel critiques, he made the leap to come to Ohio, where he grew tremendously in his talent. Layron’s tracking, inflection, live reporting, writing, confidence all grew—and within several years he was off to Miami, Florida. Layron Livingston is a success story that proves fine tuning voice, writing, delivery, time management, interviewing technique—can all make the difference.

Caryn is the best leader I’ve ever had, and coached me to be the best leader I can be. Her desire to help people become their best selves is evident. She coached and mentored me to be a professional, condident, calm leader whom my staff could trust was invaluable. She brought me out of my shell and I continue to seek her advice in my career today.

Kelsey Cano, Digital, TV Content Manager

Caryn is awesome to work with! She has a great natural sound, but also adapts easily to the styles I’ve asked her to do for commercial clients—from announcer, to conversational, to dialog. Caryn is a real pro.

Norm Kelly, Radio Production Director, Cox Media Group
Mark Ponichtera Img

Caryn has provided media training to our Sergeant’s for years at the academy, teaching them how to speak and appear professionally on camera, and most importantly, be prepared before they ever step in front of a camera. Our voice, our tone, our appearance all matters and impacts the image we portray of our department, of our professionalism, to the public we serve. Every police department, every business should take Caryn’s training if they are dealing with the media.

Lt. Mark Ponichtera, Dayton Police Department
Jones Img

Caryn is an excellent talent coach. She gave me feedback on pacing in my weathercast that allowed me to express the different levels of urgency to my viewers. Her advice on which graphics to include to better convey the information to viewers was spot on. Leaning on her guidance and critiques allowed me to successfully move from lower markets, to a mid-market, then major market station. Caryn has an eye for talent and a knack for grooming talent to get them ready for the next leap in their career.
